Admission Requirements for Baccalaureate Degree Programs

New freshmen must meet ONE of the following three requirements:

  • Achieve an ACT composite score of 18 or above OR the SAT Reasoning Test Math and Critical Reading sub-scores total 870 or above
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.6 on a 4.0 scale in all high school courses
  • Rank in the upper 60% of high school graduating class

Students must also complete the following required courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale:

  • 4 years of English
    OR ACT English sub-test score of 18 or above
    OR AP English score of 3 or above
  • 3 years of advanced mathematics
    OR ACT Math sub-test score of 20 or above
    OR AP Calculus score of 3 or above
  • 3 years of laboratory science
    OR ACT Science Reasoning sub-test score of 17 or above
    OR AP Science score of 3 or above
  • 3 years of social science
    OR ACT Social Studies/Reading sub-test score of 17 or above
    OR AP Social Studies score of 3 or above
  • 1 year of fine arts
    OR AP Fine Arts score of 3 or above
  • Computer science – At the time of admission, it is expected that students will have basic keyboarding skills and have had experience in using computer word processing, database and spreadsheet packages and in using the Internet or other wide area network. These expectations may be met by high school course work.
  • Applicants who are at least 24 years of age must have graduated from high school, completed the GED with a combined score of a minimum of 2250 and a minimum of 410 on each test, or met state requirements for the high school equivalency certificate.

Admission Requirements for Admission on Probation

To be admitted on probation, new freshmen must meet ONE of the following three requirements:

  • Achieve an ACT composite score of 16 or above OR the SAT Reasoning Test Math and Critical Reading sub-scores total 760 or above
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale in all high school courses
  • Rank in the upper 70% of high school graduating class

Transfer Student Admission


Transfer students should also see the Transfer Student page.

  • Transfer students with 24 or more semester credits are eligible to be candidates for admission if they meet both of the following standards:
    • Have a cumulative college GPA of 2.0 or above
    • Are in good academic standing with their most recently attended school
  • Students with less than a 2.0 GPA may be admitted on probation but each applicant is considered on an individual basis
  • Transfer students who have earned fewer than 24 semester credits must also meet the freshmen admission requirements above

  Admission Checklist

  • Campus Visit – Join us for a Discover DSU Day or call Enrollment Services to set up a personal campus visit at your convenience.
  • Application - Apply online or mail the application to the address listed on the paper form.
    • Please see requirements for admission listed above
  • Create a Profile – Once you’ve been accepted, create your profile and meet other accepted students to DSU.
  • Room and Board - You will receive housing and dining services contracts with your acceptance letter. Please review your options and submit to Student Services.
  • Immunization – You will receive an immunization form with your acceptance letter. Proof of two doses of the MMR vaccine are required for enrollment at Dakota State University.
  • Financial Aid - Go to www.fafsa.gov to complete your online FAFSA after January 1st. DSU’s priority date for federal financial aid is March 1st.
  • Scholarships – Students eligible for the DSU Champion Scholarships will be awarded automatically once we receive the application for admission and supporting documentation. The general scholarship application form is due in by March 1st for the upcoming school year. Please refer to the DSU Financial Aid website for additional scholarship opportunities.
  • Registration - Come to campus and set up your schedule for first semester. Once accepted, you'll get information about dates, times and activities.
