Dakota State University Campus Alert System
The South Dakota Board of Regents has implemented an “Emergency Alert System” called the Campus Alert System,
http://www.sdbor.edu/campusalert/. This system serves the public universities, special schools, and higher education centers governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents, including Dakota State University.
Dakota State students and employees will receive a registration letter via email to their DSU mail account. This registration letter provides the instructions for how to set up your contact information so that you can effectively be contacted in the case of an emergency at Dakota State. The contact methods are:
- Mobile Phone
- Second Mobile Phone
- Home Phone
- Business Phone
- Campus Assigned Email
- Secondary Email
- SMS (text message sent to mobile phone)
- Instant Messaging
You will be able to assign priorities to each of the above contact methods. In the event of an emergency, your priority one contact will be notified first, followed by your second, and so on.
If you put the same phone number in for multiple contacts (for example, Home, Business, and Mobile Phone) you could receive several phone calls, texts, and emails in the event of an emergency. You must leave the Campus Assigned Email as your DSU mail account (i.e. firstname.lastname@example.org) and it is recommended that you at least assign your Mobile Phone as a secondary contact. In that case you would receive an email to your DSU email account and a phone call with a recorded message to your Mobile Phone.
Once you receive a message from the emergency system you will be asked to reply to the message to confirm that you received it. If you do not confirm you will continue to be contacted at the numbers and addresses that you set up when you registered over and over again until you confirm.
Note that once you do confirm you may still get a few more emails or phone calls. The system will take a few minutes to catch up and acknowledge your confirmation so, until then, the system will keep contacting you will the emergency notifications. We apologize for any inconvenience this could cause, but we want 100% coverage of our students and employees and we want 100% confirmation that they all received the emergency alert.
Note that if you are taking classes from multiple campuses you may receive multiple alerts. For instance, if you are a UC student taking classes from DSU, USD, and SDSU you could conceivably receive alerts from the UC, DSU, USD, and SDSU. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this could cause but we are opting for safety over convenience in this case.
