Tech Fellow Application

Program Overview

Purpose
The program offers a select number of students each year the opportunity to support units or individual faculty/staff expand the capacity for instructional technology in the educational experience.

Selection Process
Undergraduate students attending one of South Dakota's six Regental institutions are eligible to apply to participate in the Student Technology Fellowship program if they meet the initial eligibility criteria. Students selected to participate may re-apply each academic year and receive funding for a total of eight semesters if they meet continuing eligibility criteria.

Selection Process

Incoming Freshmen Eligibility Criteria:

  • South Dakota resident
  • Minimum Cumulative High School GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Enrolled as a full-time, degree-seeking student

Current Student Eligibility Criteria:

  • South Dakota resident
  • Maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale
  • Complete 30 credits per academic year
  • Complete 165 hours of work per semester (averaging 10-12 hours per week) including meetings, training, and assigned jobs/projects

Selection Procedures

  • Each university will manage the selection of its own fellows which must be coordinated by the institutional program manager
  • Each student offered a technology fellowship would have to formally agree to meet the requirements and expectations of the program

Term of Enrollment

  • Participation in the program is term based, and periodic reviews of student technology fellows will occur
  • Participants are expected to meet the continuing eligibility criteria and complete assignments each term as directed by the institutional program manager. Failure to meet these requirements will result in termination from the program at the discretion of the program manager.

Eligible Duties & Responsibilities

Technical Support

  • Facilitate classroom preparation for technology based delivery
  • Assist with campus virtualization efforts
  • Programming for campus supported applications
  • Provide assistance for library digitalization project

Website Development & Management

  • Maintain web-based information resources
  • Migration of new design standards
  • Maintain information currency
  • Assist with web-casting/web-conferencing

Instructional Design Support

  • Assist with course design and preparation
  • Develop computer-based simulation to be used in class
  • Production of multi-media course presentations
  • Audio and video capture, editing and publishing

Professional Development

  • Assist in educational programming for faculty
  • Engage in mentoring activities for other student technology fellows
  • Coordinate e-learning activities on campus
  • Support faculty research projects utilizing technology

Ineligible Duties & Responsibilities

Student Technology Fellows do not fill the roles played by work-study students, teaching assistants or research assistants; accordingly, the list of tasks that the fellows will not be performing includes:

  • Word-processing of tests, course handouts, etc
  • Putting information in an electronic form for research projects
  • Preparing presentations for professional meetings
  • Entering management data into a spreadsheet
  • Performing clerical functions for faculty members
