Policy

Institutional control of intercollegiate athletics rests with and is exercised by the President of the University. In this capacity the President is ultimately responsible for ensuring that Dakota State University's athletic policies and programs are in compliance with the rules and regulations of the institution's National and Conference affiliations. The Athletic Director, who is accountable to the President, exercises authority for the administration and management of intercollegiate athletic programs.

Procedure

The principal function of the Athletic Committee is to advise the Dakota State University administration on all major decisions affecting the administration of the Athletic Department. The Athletic Committee shall recommend policy on intercollegiate athletics to the Athletic Director and to the President. Specific duties of the Athletic Committee include, but are not limited to:

  1. Establishing, reviewing, and updating a 5-year strategic plan for the Athletic Department based on goals, suggestions, and feedback from Athletic Committee members, Athletic Director, head coaches, and other related parties.
  2. Serving on the search and screen committee for all Athletic Department hires including, but not limited to: Athletic Director, related athletic administrative positions, and head coaches. The President shall appoint one or more members of the Athletic Committee for each search and screen committee.
  3. Monitoring the recruitment of student athletes for the impact on ideal team roster size and Title IX implications. Head coaches will provide recruiting and student-athlete commitment numbers to the committee as it relates to roster size only.
  4. Reviewing athletic schedules for opportunities to establish promotional events to increase attendance. The Athletic Committee may also assist in identifying opportunities to schedule contests as a guaranteed revenue source.
  5. Updating Athletic Handbook annually for athletic staff and student athlete policies.

Members

All members of the Athletic Committee have voting rights with the exception of the Athletic Director.

  1. Athletic Director (ex officio non-voting member)
  2. Elected faculty representative (1 of 3). The General Faculty shall make nominations using the process detailed in Section 3 of Article VII of the General Faculty Constitution
  3. Elected faculty representative (2 of 3). The General Faculty shall make nominations using the process detailed in Section 3 of Article VII of the General Faculty Constitution
  4. Elected faculty representative (3 of 3). The General Faculty shall make nominations using the process detailed in Section 3 of Article VII of the General Faculty Constitution
  5. Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) appointed by the President
  6. One student selected by the President of the University from a list of three students nominated by the Student Senate
  7. Head coach of a Women's team at DSU appointed by the President
  8. Head coach of a Men's team at DSU appointed by the President
  9. One male student-athlete selected by the Athletic Director from the Captains' Council from the teams that are not represented by the head coaches on the committee
  10. One female student-athlete selected by the Athletic Director from the Captains' Council from the teams that are not represented by the head coaches on the committee
  11. Title IX Officer
  12. Director of Physical Plant
  13. Vice President & Dean for Student Affairs
  14. Vice President for Business & Administrative Services
  15. Director of Alumni
  16. Male Student-Athlete Alum appointed by the President
  17. Female Student-Athlete Alum appointed by the President
  18. Development Officer for Athletics

Member Term Limits

  • All student members serve one-year terms.
  • All elected faculty representatives serve staggered three-year terms and may serve up to three consecutive terms.
  • The term of membership begins at the first Athletic Committee meeting in the fall (approx. September 15th) of each year and ends at the opening of the first Athletic Committee meeting the following year.

Appointment of Committee Chair

The Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) will chair the Athletic Committee as part of his or her FAR duties.

Election of Committee Vice Chair

All voting members of the Athletic Committee are eligible for election to this position. The vice chair will serve a one-year term starting at the first Athletic Committee meeting in the fall (approx. September 15th). There is no limit on the number of consecutive terms that the vice chair can serve.

Meetings

The Committee will meet approximately four times per year (twice per semester).
