Policy

Credit by Examination

Graduate students may petition the program's committee to receive credit by examination for a course. A grade of "B" or better is required on the exam to successfully challenge the course. (See DSU Policy 03-51-00 Recording of Non-Traditional Credit.)

Credit for work experience

No credit will be offered for prior work experience, but the student can challenge any course by successfully completing the credit by examination process.

Credit for Correspondence Courses

No credit will be given for correspondence courses, except under extraordinary conditions and with the prior approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research.

Procedures

Credit by Examination

The request for credit by examination should accompany the Plan of Study during the first semester in the program in order to avoid any misunderstanding regarding acceptance of such requests. The request should be directed to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research and should be accompanied with documentation supporting their request.

The graduate program's coordinator will coordinate the evaluation of the credit by examination request with members of the graduate program's committee. Once approved, the graduate program's coordinator will coordinate the offering of the exam with members of the program's committee. The result form of the exam must be signed by the faculty member offering the exam, the graduate program's coordinator, and approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. A grade of "B" or better is required on the exam to successfully challenge the course.
