How to Request Materials

About Interlibrary Loan

  • Request Interlibrary Loan when you need materials that are not available in the Mundt Library and are not accessible online. Interlibrary Loan is a service in which libraries borrow from and loan materials to other libraries.

  • Distance students may use the Interlibrary Loan forms to request delivery of materials to them -- whether located in the Mundt Library or in another library.

  • Textbooks for courses may *not* be requested primarily because it is impossible to meet the demand. Materials that may be requested include fiction and non-fiction books, magazine and journal articles, and non-print media such as DVDs and CDs.

  • Dakota State University students, faculty, and staff may request interlibrary loans

    • On the Madison campus: Faculty, staff and currently enrolled DSU students may use the Interlibrary Loan Service to get books, articles and other materials that are not in the Mundt Library.

    • Off Campus: Students currently taking DSU classes in other locations and DSU faculty and staff in other locations may use the Interlibrary Loan Service to get books, articles and other materials that are unavailable at their class locations.

  • Interlibrary loan services are free to Dakota State University students, faculty and staff.

Turnaround time

  • All requests are sent out within one workday (Monday-Friday, excluding holidays).

  • We cannot guarantee when items will be received because that depends on the loaning library (item availability; speed of response) and delivery method (electronic, postal mail, courier).

  • Books may be received as quickly as 3 days but are likely to take 7-14 days. Hard to obtain items can take longer.

  • Some articles may be received within 24 hours if the loaning library responds immediately and delivers electronically. But articles, too, are likely to take 7-14 days. Hard to obtain items can take longer.

  • What you enter on the request form in response to "I don't need this item after (enter date in format mm/dd/yy)" is important. We will stop trying to get the requested item on that date.

  • The library may not be able to find a library willing to loan the item. For example, rare items, items owned by very few libraries, items in special collections and archives, and some media types may be impossible to get via loan. Library staff will work with you to find alternative sources or to find contact information for arranging visits to use collections at other libraries.

How to request material.

  • The Library uses a system for Interlibrary Loan called "ILLiad" that allows you to track your requests and see a history of requests.

  • The first time you use ILLiad to request an item, you must register to create a personal account and to select your ILLiad username and password.

  • To create your ILLiad account; or to login to request an item; or to login to learn the status of your requests, link to the ILLiad login screen:

ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Request and Tracking

  • On the login screen, FIRST TIME USERS must click on the "First Time User" link to create an account. Your Library ID and password WILL NOT WORK for login unless you use them as your username and password when you set up your ILLiad account. You may choose any username and password you wish for your ILLiad login.

  • After logging into ILLiad Interlibrary Loan, request an item by selecting the appropriate request form on the left side of the screen (article, book, etc.).

  • After logging into ILLiad Interlibrary Loan, track your in-process requests and requests completed by going to the "View" section on the left side of the ILLiad screen.

  • NOTE: When searching non-DSU libraries in the Library Catalog and when searching some other library research databases, look for an "Interlibrary Loan" link. In the Library Catalog, you'll find it above the item when looking at an item's description in the Library Catalog. The link will take you to our ILLiad (interlibrary loan) request page.

  • Articles and other short documents will be emailed to you. Students attending class in Madison will be notified by e-mail to pick up any books, DVDs, or other media that can't be emailed. Media that cannot be emailed to DISTANCE STUDENTS will be mailed; the student pays the cost of shipping such items back to the Library. However, students at the University Center in Sioux Falls may pick up and return materials there.
