MSET Electives
DSU students must take 11 hours of elective courses, choosing either the thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option, CET 798, counts for four elective credit hours. Students may not take both the thesis option (CET 798) and the Educational Computing Project (CET 788); nor can they choose both the thesis option and the practicum (CET 795). Students registering for the practicum (CET 795) must obtain permission from their advisors.
CET 657 Network Operating Systems Topics
This course will provide an overview of the South Dakota K-12 network operating systems. Topics will include, but are not limited to: installing, configuring, and deploying Microsoft Windows XP clients; managing and coordinating the various facets of Microsoft Windows 2003 Server; and managing and deploying Active Directory. (2 credit hours)
CET 659 Teaching in the One to One Computing Environment
This course will prepare participants for a ubiquitous computing environment including classroom management and use of appropriate software as part of a 1 to 1 implementation. Curriculum product ideas and strategies for student engagement within content areas (math, science, languages, social studies, etc.) will be developed and shared within teams to emphasize best practices of 1 to 1 computing. (2 credit hours)
CET 721 Web Authoring
This course is an introduction to web authoring in education. The course consists of two components: information presentation in hypermedia (using FrontPage), and digital graphic creation. Participants will learn the fundamentals in these two areas as well as their applications in educational settings. (1 credit hours)
CET 726 Technology in the Curriculum
The course promotes the systematic design and development of computer-based and related technologies curriculum. The course also examines the impact of technology on the teaching and learning process. (3 credit hours)
CET 747 Web & ITV Based Applications of Dist Ed
A study of the processes and procedures for using Web-based and distance education technologies to support learning. The course includes a survey of instructional strategies on these platforms best addressing unique learning styles. The focus will be on applying the technology in ways that facilitate learner collaboration, distributed learning, and an engaging learning environment. (3 credit hours)
CET 749 Policy and Management of Distance Education
Using the systems approach, this course examines the model of governance of distance education organizations. The course focuses on identification and analysis of the institutional policies, management procedures, and strategic planning efforts necessary to managing distance education programs in a way that is engaging and equitable to the learner. Topics include: conducting needs assessments, preparing new programming tools, marketing plans, developing budgets and management plans, developing program evaluations, and so on. (3 credit hours)

CET 750 Multimedia II
Developing computer-based educational software using hypermedia, authoring languages, telecommunications, and programming languages based on current educational research. This course requires a 4-5 day campus residency. (3 credit hours)

CET 753 Network Management in Educational Institutions
Network management of educational institutions and networks. Topics include protocols, security, configuration of storage, backup and performance, printing, remote access, virtual private networks, tuning and troubleshooting. This course requires a summer one-week on-campus residency. (2 credit hours)

CET 758 Advanced Instructional Programming
Development and application of educationally sound programs for a variety of student groups and subject areas. An extension of techniques developed in CET 756 Introduction to Instructional Programming. (2 credit hours)

CET 759 One to One Computing Implementation
This course is an intensive, hands-on experience that will ready the participant in technical areas relating 1 to 1 computing. Special attention will be paid to primary technical areas including virtual server, active directory, base image design and deployment, and group policy. Prior experience and working knowledge in these areas is assumed. The course is not intended for beginning audiences, but instead focuses on the detailed inner workings of supporting the 1 to 1 computing at an advanced level. (4 credit hours)
CET 760 Social Impact of Computer Technology
Telecommunications technologies will be used to research the social impact of technology on other social systems. Future trends of technology will be explored for the purpose of examining the paradigm shift in education and training. (2 credit hours)
CET 769 Adult Learning for Distance Education
This course examines various approaches to adult learning and examines theories of adult learning. Students will study the development of adult learning and its relationship to distance education. (3 credit hours)
CET 788 Educational Computing Research Project
The design of significant action research in an area of computer education and technology. (2 credit hours)

A study of specialized aspects of educational computing and technology. (2 credit hours)
CET 792 Special Topics: (topic to be determined by request)
Advanced study covering topics not regularly taught in the computer education and technology program. (1-3 credit hours)
CET 795 Practicum
Supervised experience in educational technology exposing the student to exposes the student to new knowledge, strategies, and skills that are or possibly could become part of their job responsibilities (Advisor approval required-Consult Practicum Policy). (3 credit hours)
