SDBOR recognizes DSU student organizations
December 19, 2008
The South Dakota Board of Regents has awarded student organizations at Dakota State University special recognition for their academic work, community service, and leadership.
Student organization award winners are:
Award for Academic Excellence - The Phi Beta Lambda Business Club brings business and education together in a positive working relationship focused on leadership and career development programs. The club this year coordinated workshops on topics such as business apparel, creating an effective resume, and investing. Members also attended workshops and business competitions, including the PBL state and national leadership conferences, where they applied what they have learned in their academic program.
Community Service Award - The Dakota State University chapter of the South Dakota Education Association provides students pursuing a career in education with a variety of professional experiences. The members volunteered their time and expertise to staff an after-school tutoring program for K-5 students. They also went into local schools to teach a reading lesson that integrated art into the classroom. Activities were planned for "Read Across America," and several members used the Internet to communicate with middle school Chinese students learning English.
Award for Organizational Leadership - Students in Free Enterprise apply the knowledge they gain in the classroom to projects that the organization conducts in the community. Recent projects include helping lower-income families with their tax filing, talking to K-12 students about basic financial literacy, and selling pumpkins as part of a lesson in entrepreneurial business start-ups. The group also began airing a radio program on financial information and responsibility for Dakota State students on student radio station KDSU.
