Western images of China -Chinese images of the West
The general public is invited to a presentation by Dr. Richard Bodman entitled, “Western images of China and Chinese images of the West” Tuesday, September 14 from 4-5pm in the Mundt Foundation in the lower level of the Mundt Library on the Dakota State University campus. Bodman is professor emeritus of Chinese language and literature, St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN. He is a descendent of Benjamin Franklin’s daughter Sarah Franklin Bache and is visiting Madison to participate in events at the Mundt Library during the Benjamin Franklin exhibit.
His presentation covers a sixty-year period from a time of great political tension between China and the United States to a time of greater cooperation and somewhat lesser tension. Bodman will show pictures from 1949 to the present, drawing on color illustrations from the Chinese satire magazine Manhua, cover art from Time and Newsweek, US and Chinese comic book art, Chinese popular woodblock prints, Chinese political posters, and others.
