Stevenson is Huron HS Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
Dakota State University's long-time cross country and track head coach Buzz Stevenson was inducted to the Huron High School's Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 18.
Stevenson coached at the high school level for 14 years. Of those 14 years, he coached at Huron High School for 10 years. Stevenson led the boys' track and field team to their first ever Eastern South Dakota (ESD) conference championship in 1976, repeating in 1977 and 1978.
In 1977, his boys' track and field team was the state runner-up and his girls' cross country team finished as state champions; the first ever state title for any Huron girls' athletic team. Stevenson was named South Dakota Boys' Track Coach of the Year in 1978.
Before coming to Dakota State University, he coached Yankton College for two years. He spent the last 25 years as men's/women's cross country/track head coach at DSU. While at Dakota State, his teams have amassed 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference (SDIC) championships, and his athletes have produced 52 All-American honors.
Stevenson garnered 14 SDIC "Coach of the Year" titles. He was also named the NAIA Great Plains regional cross country coach of the year twice.
Stevenson was a standout athlete at Ipswich High School in football, basketball and track. He attended Yankton College and was named All-Conference in football and track.
Buzz has been a coach and teacher for a total of 43 years.
