DSU Gala Raises Record Amount
The annual Dakota State University Foundation scholarship fundraising gala brought people from Madison, Sioux Falls, the surrounding areas and as far away as Arizona, together for a record-setting fundraising event July 9. Final tallies show the event raised over $33,000 for scholarships at Dakota State. The event included both live and silent auctions, raffle items, dinner and dancing.
"We owe thanks to so many people for helping make this event successful including our Gala co-chairs Nini and Jim Hart and Alice and Maury Poppen, our generous donors, and the many guests who attended the Gala," said Judy Payne, DSU Vice President for University Advancement.
For over 25 years the DSU Gala has served as the premier fundraising event for Dakota State. Payne says due to the variety of gala themes, entertainment, and items available for auction, the event is becoming more popular. "Our mission is to raise scholarship money for deserving students. It is especially gratifying when we can accomplish that while giving our guests a fun and memorable experience." Payne credits the auction for a large portion of the gala's success. "We had wonderful donations for the auction from business people, individuals, and alumni from here in Madison, Sioux Falls, Arizona, even North Carolina. We were able to offer items to gala guests that were unique and that generated a great deal of pre-event interest."
Facilitated by auctioneer Wayne Bessman, 17 items were sold during the live auction. Another 42 items were sold during the silent auction. Many of the items were one of a kind, including original artwork. Other items included trips to golf resorts, sporting events, and use of vacation homes. Over 50 items were included in the raffle.
Gala attendees and DSU alumni Chad and Molly Knutson of Madison left with several auction items, and a sense of contributing to their alma mater. "We both received scholarships as students so we understand the need to raise money for other deserving students," says Molly. "That is one of the reasons we attended the Gala. The other is that it is really a fun time!"
The date for the 2011 Gala is set for July 22.
