McDowell DSU commencement speaker
Mike McDowell, General Manager and CEO of Heartland Consumers Power District since May 2004, will serve as commencement speaker for Dakota State University's fall graduation December 11. Commencement begins at 10:30 at the DSU Fieldhouse. The ceremony will also be live webcast and can be accessed through the DSU website.
McDowell is a graduate of the University of Kansas, holding a BS degree in education and political science as well as a master of public administration degree. His course work included electrical engineering and advanced management.
He has worked in the electric industry for over 25 years, serving as CEO of both utility trade associations as well as operating utilities. McDowell has served on the Board of Directors of the American Public Power Association, the national association of municipal utilities and chaired committees of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) responsible for national energy policies.
McDowell has served in leadership positions in numerous community organizations, including two four-year terms as a local elected official and as a member of a county planning commission. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Lake Area Improvement Corporation, an economic development agency of Lake County and the City of Madison, South Dakota.
Heartland provides electric power to Madison and other communities in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa.
