Nelson Presents at CA Arts Event
DSU English professor and writer Dr. John S. Nelson was an invited speaker at an arts event in San Francisco on Friday, March 12. Nelson was invited to read poetry, along with three other poets, including Rick Lupert, Bette O’Callaghan, and Sarah Kobrinski. Joe Kady and The Levins provided musical entertainment.
The event, Poetry at the Pottery, is third in a series of events that celebrates poetry, music, pottery, and the arts in general.
Nelson has published poetry in a variety of small magazines, including Poetry Motel, Farmer’s Market, South Dakota Review, College English, and other publications. He has read in various venues, including a session with former US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser at the University of South Dakota. He has read poetry and prose in Madison, Sioux Falls, Vermillion, Rapid City, Kansas City, Dodge City, and Wichita, among others.
A recipient of a South Dakota Arts Council Artist’s grant and other awards, Nelson has written poetry and prose for over 20 years.
An English professor at DSU since 1996, Nelson has recently been involved with work on a four-volume set of English textbooks for Chinese business students, but he prefers more creative work.
Poet Rick Lupert works in Los Angeles and publishes poetry in a wide variety of magazines and literary journals and maintains an online poetry site. Bette O’Callaghan lives and works in Austin, Texas, and publishes poetry online and in a wide variety of venues. Sarah Kobrinsky is a native of Fargo, North Dakota and has published poetry in the United Kingdom and the US.
