Poppens are Parade Marshals for DSU Homecoming
Maury and Alice Poppen have been chosen as grand marshals of Dakota State University's Trojan Days Parade.
The Poppens will lead the parade which begins at the south end of Egan Avenue at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 25. The parade is part of the annual Trojan Days Homecoming festivities.
DSU President Doug Knowlton commended the Poppens for their service to Dakota State. "Both Maury and Alice have demonstrated their commitment to Dakota State through their generous donations of time and of their resources, including a major pledge to the capital campaign. They underscored their endorsement of their belief in our mission and in our students with their service to DSU and we are pleased to honor them as our 2010 homecoming parade marshals."
Alice Poppen was a non-traditional student at Dakota State in 1980-1981. She went on to serve the United States District Court System in Rapid City, retiring in 2000. Upon her return to Madison, Alice was asked to serve on the Dakota State University Foundation Board of Trustees. She took over as Board Chair in 2008. As Chair, Alice oversees official Board functions, and represents the Foundation at a variety of Dakota State activities.
Maury Poppen is a 1959 graduate of General Beadle State Teachers College. He spent 33 years teaching, 27 of those in the Las Vegas school system. He also coached, leading his high school baseball team to the Nevada State Championship. While at GBSTC, Maury was a member of the Trojan Men's Basketball Team, and was 2 year all conference player. His leadership on the court was recognized in 2003 when he was inducted into the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame
