DSU PBL Dominates Spring Leadership Conference

Dakota State University students competed in the regional Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Spring Leadership Conference. The conference was held in Iowa City, IA, February 26 and 27. Students from nine colleges and universities competed for an opportunity to move on to the national PBL conference in Nashville, TN this summer.

Dakota State dominated the competition, taking 10 first places, 8 second, and 2 third. DSU PBL students took more awards per person than any other group in attendance. Eight DSU students earned the right to move onto the national competition. To qualify, the students needed to finish either first or second in their events.

In four events, DSU swept the first and second place awards. Those events included Public Speaking, Client Services, Cyber Security, and Networking Concepts. DSU also won first place in the following events: Accounting Principles, Business Communications, Computer Concepts, Network Designs, and Word Processing.

Suzanne Swett, a four year veteran of PBL competitions, took first place in all three individual events in which she competed. In his first year in PBL, Aaron Fields won two individual firsts, and he along with teammate Ted Jackson, earned a first place in the only team event DSU competed in, Network Design. Ted Jackson and Alexz Metzinger each won first in two events and second in their other events.

The individual results listed below highlight the range of subjects competed in by the DSU students and how those subjects are underscore the success of DSU's majors programs and mission.
