WIST Workshop Features Top Women Scientists

Women in Science & Technology (WIST) at Dakota State University is hosting a Careers in Science Workshop, April 12 in the Mundt Foundation. The workshop starts at 9:00am and will be done by 11:30am. DSU students are encouraged to attend.

The workshop will feature women involved in antiterrorist and World Trade Center collapse studies, space shuttle projects, astronaut training, the NATO program, the health care system, and research directed at finding a cure for allergic asthma.

The workshop presenters are listed below.

Monica Starnes is an MIT graduate with a doctorate degree in structures and materials. She is aa Senior Program Officer at the National Academies where she is in charge of multiple transportation research projects. Monica conducted World Trade Center collapse studies, advised the Pentagon on master planning, provided antiterrorism advice, and supported the Hurricane George reconstruction project.

Carla Kurta has a degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the Ohio State University. She is a Systems Test Engineer with SAIC. She has worked with 5 NASA centers and has been involved in the U.S. space shuttle program and worked with the Russian Progress spacecraft.

Jane Schuh has a doctorate in cellular and molecular biology from NDSU where she is now a Professor of Immunology in the Department of Microbiology. Her current research investigates the development and persistence of allergic asthma.

Whitney Robertson is the Director of Commercialization for Sanford Health Merit Care. She manages intellectual property and licensing activities for all inventions created within the health system. She holds a doctorate in cellular molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dawn Ottman has a degree from the Royal Military College in Canada and is that country's first female space scientist. She served in the Canadian Air Force and worked for National Defense Headquarters on NATO and NORAD projects.
