Knowltons are Philanthropists of the Year

Dr. Doug and Sharon Knowlton are the 2012 Philanthropists of the Year. They will be recognized at the 7th annual Legends and Legacy Banquet at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse on Thursday, March 1.

Doug Knowlton served as the 21st President of Dakota State University from 2004-2012. He recently left DSU to take the position as vice chancellor for academic and Doug and Sharon Knowltonstudent affairs for the Minnesota State Colleges and University system.

Knowlton earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Denver; and a master's degree in psychology and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, both from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. While at DSU, enrollment set new records, increasing 2,295 to 3,102. The number of master's programs doubled from three to six with the addition of master's programs in information assurance, health informatics, and business administration. DSU also gained approval for its first doctoral program, a Doctor of Science in Information Systems, in 2006.

Knowlton led DSU in launching its first Capital Campaign. He also championed research efforts on campus, noting $8.4 million alone in new grants and contracts in 2010.

Sharon Knowlton has been the principal at the Madison High School since 2005. She attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, and earned a master’s degree in Curriculum/Education from the University of North Dakota in 1991. She was admitted to the doctoral program in Educational Administration in 1995, and worked on the doctorate until 1997, earning fourteen credits in the program.

She taught high school and middle school English in various places including Hopewell, Virginia, and East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Knowlton taught in the classroom from 1973-1995 and served as the elementary principal at River Heights/New Heights Elementary School in East Grand Forks, Minnesota from 1996-1999. She was the high school principal at East Grand Forks Senior High from 1999-2004. After moving to Madison, Sharon was the Director of the Graduate Programs Office at DSU from 2004-2005.

During their affiliation with the university, both Doug and Sharon Knowlton demonstrated their commitment to DSU through acts of generosity with their time and resources. The Knowltons support the Champion Scholarship program, various athletic funds, including the Trojan Athletic Club, and a Celebration of Teaching Annual Scholarship. They continue to support the Dr. Doug and Sharon Knowlton Scholarship Endowment, established when Doug Knowlton was named DSU President. The endowment is awarded to an incoming freshman with academic abilities and leadership potential.

The DSU Office for University Advancement, including the DSU Foundation, is proud to name Dr. Doug and Sharon Knowlton the 2012 Legends and Legacy Philanthropists of the Year. The award is made with grateful appreciation of their service to DSU, and of their commitment to our students, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, and the larger DSU community.
