Deb Bowman DSU commencement speaker
Dakota State University’s fall commencement is Saturday, Dec. 14, 10:30 a.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D. Dakota State will award 6 doctorate, 46 master’s, 75 baccalaureate and 18 associate degrees. Brandi Feldmann and Gateka Verite will serve as student marshals, and Dr. Vicki Sterling, Professor of Education, is mace bearer.
Deb Bowman, current Senior Advisor to S.D. Gov. Daugaard, serves as this year’s commencement speaker. Before joining the Daugaard Administration, Bowman served for five years as Secretary of the Department of Social Services under Gov. Rounds.
Bowman also served in state government as senior policy advisor to the governor for the Departments of Health, Social Services and Human Services, a senior staff member and director of Homeland Security for former Gov. Janklow, manager of Government Affairs for US West, director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities, chief executive officer for ECCO, Inc., and middle school English teacher in Luverne, Minn.
Bowman is originally from Madison, S.D., where she attended Dakota State University, and received a bachelor’s degree in education, majoring in English, speech and theatre. In 2009, Bowman was awarded the Dakota State University Distinguished Alumni Award.
A kidney transplant recipient, she has a passion for life. She enjoys her family and friends, spending time with her grandchildren, supporting the Gift of Life Transplant House, promoting organ donation, reading, and walking.
She has been married to her husband, Randy, since 1975, and has two daughters, Brooke and Jessamine, two sons-in-law, Leejay and Rob, and four grandchildren, Georgianna, Ireland, Carter and Mason.
