Things for the Family

The Deadwood History Summer Camp series for 2013 features a wide variety of camps for students in grades K-12. The camp topics will focus on learning about the history of the Black Hills, from pioneers to geology.  The Camps cover a little bit of everything. This year the camps are:

June 24-28- Pioneer Camp

            Age: Grades 3-7 (for school year 2013-2014)

            Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

            Cost: $55

            Location: Days of ‘76 Museum, 18 Seventy Six Dr. Deadwood

Description: Students will learn about the life of a pioneer. They will have the opportunity to learn finger crocheting, make rag dolls and tin can lanterns, build mini covered wagons, make and play pioneer games and have a day of pioneer style “school”. Other activities include gold panning, hiking, and a taffy pull.

What to Bring: Children will be provided with a nutritious morning and afternoon snack every day, a camp t-shirt to wear each day and plenty of water. Children need to bring a lunch (coolers provided), wear closed toe shoes for hiking, clothes that can get dirty, a hat to shade the sun and sunscreen.

 

July 8-10 – Science Camp

            Age:  Grades K-7 (for school year 2013-2014)

            Time:  Two sessions (students may attend only one):      9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon OR 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

            Cost:  $35

Location:  Homestake Adams Research & Cultural Center (HARCC), 150 Sherman St. Deadwood

Description: Rock on!  The topic for Science camp is local geology. Students will learn about local rocks and minerals.  By the end of camp students will be able to identify a few of them.  We’ll play games, do projects and go on a rock hunt.

What to Bring:  Campers will be given a camp t-shirt to wear each day. They should dress to be active and outdoors. Shoes for hiking, a hat and sunscreen are a must!  We will provide one snack each day. Please send a water bottle and extra snacks for extra hungry campers.

 

July 15-19 – Natural History Camp

            Age: Grades K-2 (for school year 2013-2014)

            Time:  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

            Cost:  $45

Location: Homestake Adams Research & Cultural Center (HARCC), 150 Sherman St. Deadwood

Description:  Students will learn the natural history of the Black Hills with topics focusing on local plants, animals and landforms. The Black Hills forest service will teach a lesson on local plants. Activities include bark rubbings, tree collages, paper mache landforms and more!

What to Bring:  Campers will be given a camp t-shirt to wear each day. They should wear a hat, sunscreen and shoes for hiking. We will provide one snack each day. Please send a water bottle and extra snacks for extra hungry campers. Students have the option to participate in the Days of ‘76 parades on July 26th and 27th.

 

July 22-26 – Natural History Camp

            Age:  Grades 3-7 (for school year 2013-2014)

            Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

            Cost:  $45

Location: Homestake Adams Research & Cultural Center (HARCC), 150 Sherman St., Deadwood

Description:  Participants will learn all about local plants, landforms and animals during Natural History Camp. The Black Hills Forest Service will be stopping by to talk about local plants. Activities include landform dioramas, adopt a tree and more!

What to bring:  Campers will be given a camp t-shirt to wear each day. Please wear a hat, sunscreen and shoes for hiking. We will provide one snack every day. Please send a water bottle and extra snacks for extra hungry campers. Students have the option to participate in the Days of ‘76 parades on July 26th and 27th.
