Dr. Kevin Krahenbuhl's Geography for Elementary Teachers class at Dakota State University has taken a unique approach to the traditional field trip experience. Krahenbuhl's class and fourth graders from Madison Elementary school recently took a co-university and elementary school field trip to the United States Geological Survey Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (USGS EROS) in Sioux Falls, S.D. This partnership between the university and elementary school is one the newest ways that DSU is looking to better prepare teachers by providing real world experiences.

Adam Klindworth, a Dakota State University graduate student pursuing a master of science in information assurance, placed 2^nd in the Symantec Cyber Readiness Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn., on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Klindworth found out about the Challenge from a 2012 DSU computer and network security graduate, Devon Greene, who also participated in the event and finished in 3^rd place.

Dakota State University released another year of record enrollment numbers for Fall 2012 today (Tuesday, September 25). Student headcount at DSU gained slightly from last year, increasing from 3,102 to 3,110. Total full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment decreased slightly from 1746.1 to 1,727.7, a 1.05 percent decrease from Fall 2011. New students increased 7.89 percent, with a large part of that due to a 16.53 percent increase in transfers since Fall 2011.

The South Dakota Board of Regents has approved a new graduate degree for Dakota State University in applied computer science. The Madison school will use distance technology to deliver it, allowing more people to pursue an advanced degree while employed.

The Journal of Information Systems Applied Research (JISAR) recently selected the top five papers from the Conference on Information Systems Applied Research (CONISAR) to be featured in their upcoming issue. The event was organized by professors Kelly MacLeod and Stacey Berry, who are part of the AAUW Campus Action Project team on campus. According to the American Heart Association, effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim's chance of survival. Dakota State University employees recently had the chance to become certified or re-certified in lifesaving CPR. A total of 47 faculty and staff received CPR certification, with 16 of those being new certifications.

Faulkton Area Medical Center (FAMC) a 12-bed critical access hospital in Faulkton, S.D., has met Stage 1 Meaningful Use criteria using a certified electronic health record (EHR). By successfully attesting for Stage 1 Meaningful Use with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Faulkton can receive payments from an EHR incentive payment program recently initiated in South Dakota. The incentive payments would help FAMC partially recover costs already incurred to meet federally mandated program guidelines. FAMC is one of the first facilities in South Dakota to achieve this milestone.

Physician first in SD to be federally validated as meaningful user

HealthPOINT announced today that Dr. Annette Bosworth is the first healthcare provider in South Dakota to be validated, through the use of an Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) toolset, as a meaningful user of a certified electronic health record (EHR). Bosworth is an internal medicine physician and owns her own practice, Independent Medicine. Bosworth received assistance from HealthPOINT, South Dakota's Regional Extension Center, and with their help, passed three necessary milestones. Upon submission of her data to the CMS EHR Incentive Program, Bosworth will be eligible to receive incentive payments for adopting EHR technology through South Dakota's Medicaid program. HealthPOINT, a non-profit group, is designated by the federal government to assist South Dakota health care providers, like Bosworth, to become meaningful users of certified EHR's.

The family of Dakota State alumnus Larry Dirks recently set up an endowment in his memory to provide scholarships for student athletes. Harlan J. and Delphia B. Dirks established the Lawrence W. Dirks Memorial Endowed Scholarship with a $150,000 gift. Harlan, a retired Foreign Service Officer, is Larry's brother, and lives in Washington, D.C. with wife Delphia.

During the last week of October, fifteen students from Dakota State University attended the AIGA conference held in Sioux Falls. The South Dakota chapter of AIGA is the professional association for design, which serves the graphic design fields through South Dakota, by offering a variety of programs and events held throughout the year. One of these events was their student day held on Oct. 27; fifteen DSU students attended this event. The event field trip to Sioux Falls, was organized and promoted on campus by Professors Linn Nelson and Deb Tech.

Joplin Tornado Coordinator to Speak at South Dakota's Largest Health IT Event

When Joplin, Missouri suffered a F-5 tornado earlier this year, St. John’s Medical Center was devastated. The story was covered internationally, with many images showing how St. John’s lost its top two floors and where every window was shattered. Amidst the structural damage, medical equipment and patient charts were destroyed or lost during the horrific storm, so Ron Fovargue, Vice President of Technology for St. John’s healthcare system, was called in to help coordinate the recovery efforts. Due to their use of technology and their recent electronic health records (EHR) implementation, patient charts were accessible.

DSU Posts Another Record Enrollment for Fall

Dakota State University released another year of record enrollment numbers for Fall 2011 today (Tuesday, September 27th). Despite the SD Public University System posting a .92% decrease in enrollment, student headcount at DSU held steady from last year, increasing from 3,101 to 3,102. Total full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment increased from 1,708.0 to 1,746.1, a 2.23% increase from Fall 2010. The state system over all reported a .35% gain in FTE.

Citibank in Sioux Falls has established a scholarship endowment at Dakota State University, in recognition of the ties between the bank and the university. The Citibank Scholarship Endowment was established through a $50,000 pledge to DSU’s 2.0 Capital Campaign, and will be paid to the university over 5 years. Dakota State University faculty member Alan Montgomery’s work “Deepwater Horizon” has been accepted to the Carriage House National Juried Exhibit. His work was selected from among 175 entries from over 20 states. The work is a three-panel mixed media painting, which is part of a series exploring the evolving impact of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Montgomery is an association professor of art in the DSU College of Arts and Science.

Since spring 2010, already more than 85,000 health care providers have partnered with the national network of Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers (RECs) to build the foundation for an electronically enabled health care system in the U.S. The majority of the providers who have signed up for REC support are affiliated with either small private practices or community health centers, with many specializing in family practice or internal medicine. South Dakota providers are part of that growing number.

Nathan Edwards, a digital arts and design faculty member with the Dakota State University College of Arts and Science, recently finished a complete redesign of the website for Prairie Village. The project was overseen by Prairie Village manager, Stan Rauch, as well as University Sponsored Programs Director, Mickie Kreidler. The site was also built with the assistance of Prairie Village board member Robert Gehringer, who currently serves as the webmaster.

When life-long Madison resident Marjorie Hetland passed away in April 2011, her family decided to honor her memory by establishing an annual scholarship at Dakota State University. Marjorie did not have the opportunity to attend college, but understood the importance of a college degree, and encouraged her children to pursue higher education. Marjorie’s son Wayne graduated from DSU in 1980; her daughter Eileen Creel, now deceased, graduated in 1970. Daughters-in-law Therese (Gary) graduated from DSU in 1982 and Pam (Wayne) in 1983. Granddaughters Melissa Minnaert graduated from DSU in 1997 and Stacy Olson graduated in 2005.

East River Electric Power Cooperative of Madison has made a $25,000 gift to DSU 2.0, The Capital Campaign and through the efforts of Jeff Nelson, General Manager at East River, Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Bismarck, ND is matching the gift. The gifts are being used to establish the East River and Basin Electric Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Scholarship Endowment at Dakota State. The endowment will assist students from electric cooperatives’ membership. East River is a member of Basin Electric, one of the nation’s largest electric generation and transmission (G&T) cooperatives. Both utilities are members of the Touchstone Energy cooperative network.

A study completed by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and published in the journal Health Affairs finds growing evidence of the benefits of health information technology (HIT). The new study finds that 92 percent of articles on HIT reached conclusions that showed overall positive effects of HIT on key aspects of care including quality and efficiency of health care. In addition, the study also finds increasing evidence of benefits for all health care providers, not just the larger health IT “leader” organizations (i.e. early adopters of HIT) that provided much of the data regarding experience with health IT in the past.

The next session of classes for Dakota State University’s HIT Workforce Development Training certificates will begin later this month. DSU is participating with other colleges and universities across the nation to design and deliver short term, non-degree programs in health information technology to help meet the needs of the South Dakota healthcare providers. DSU offers four health IT certificates available. HIT Implementation and Support which addresses critical components of implementation and supporting HIT and electronic health records (EHR’s) in health facilities. The trainer program will prepare individuals to plan and deliver quality training programs to the end user. The management program is for individuals that have a desire to be in a leadership role and provide the knowledge and skill to providers as they transition to meaningful use, EHR’s and health information exchange. The workflow specialist program is ideal for individuals with workflow redesign responsibilities or transitioning into such a role as part of an EHR implementation and adoption.

Benjamin Franklin was far more than the Founding Father who flew a kite. Franklin’s acclaim in Europe as a scientist provided him with entry into scientific and social circles that made possible his later diplomatic efforts and renown as a statesman. His scientific research earned him honorary degrees from Harvard and Yale and the Copley Medal from London’s Royal Society, making him the first person outside of Britain to receive the prestigious award.

DSU men's XC team ranks 15th in NAIA preseason poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Defending National Champion Malone (Ohio) has been picked as the No. 1 team in the NAIA Men's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Wednesday. Dakota State ranks No. 15 with 273 points in the national poll. It is the highest rank for the Trojans since 2009 when they ranked No. 19 in the final national poll. The Trojans captured their first ever Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) title last season in Rapid City, S.D. DSU finished 16th at the NAIA Men's Cross Country National Championship meet in Vancouver, Wash. in November. Fifteen conferences had at least one team land a spot in the preseason poll.

Dakota State University Athletics announced today that it plans to leave the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) in July of 2011. The Madison area phase of Dakota State University’s capital campaign in underway, with the initial group of donors pledging $1.2 million. The campaign is segmented into six phases: Madison area, DSU faculty and staff, DSU Athletics, DSU alumni, corporations, and the Jeff Fox Information Technology Building. Each phase is led by a team of volunteers. The faculty and staff phase is near completion, with over $1.3 million in donations and pledges raised. The overall capital campaign goal is $37 million.

Lee Wong, a senior computer and network security student at Dakota State University, has received a Department of Defense Information Assurance Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. Scholarships are awarded through all Department of Defense agencies; Wong’s scholarship specifically was awarded through the Space and Naval Warfare Center (SPAWAR) in Washington, D.C. The scholarship was awarded through a Department of Defense grant submitted in 2010 by DSU professor Dr. Josh Pauli.

GAMMA XI Chapter of Delta Mu Delta, Dakota State University, held its annual awards and initiation banquet at Nicky's Restaurant on April 22. Delta Mu Delta is a national honor society in the field of business administration. To be chosen for this honor, a student must attain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have completed at least half of the courses needed to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Membership in Delta Mu Delta is a lifetime membership. Dr. David Peak, a faculty member in the College of Business and Information Systems, was inducted as an honorary member of Delta Mu Delta. Honorary members are selected by current members to recognize contributions by the individual to the business community and to education.

Dakota State University Participates in College Training Program for Health Information Workforce

Dakota State will receive $625,000 as a participant in a training program directed by Bellevue College in Washington. Under the agreement, Dakota State will coordinate non-degree training in health information technology. The consortium includes institutions in North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and South Dakota. Partnering with DSU in South Dakota are Mitchell Tech, Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City and the University of Alaska-Anchorage. DSU Professor Publishes Second Volume of Textbook

DSU Associate Professor of English Dr. John Nelson recently published the second volume in a series of textbooks for teaching English to Chinese business students. Continuing his work with several Chinese professors in Shanghai who teach business English, Nelson completed the first volume of a four-volume set of textbooks in 2009, and the second came out this year. Titled College Business English Integrated Course, the student and teacher’s textbooks are published in Beijing by Quinhua University Press, one of the most prestigious university presses in China.

Pardy was named to the position after serving as the Acting Campaign Director/Development Officer for the past four months. Pardy will begin serving in her new position immediately.

DSU’s academic advising program exceeds students’ needs, according to the 2009 Survey of Academic Advising. During the spring 2009 semester, students were offered the opportunity to complete a comprehensive online survey evaluating their advising experiences at DSU. Students were asked to rate their satisfaction with their advisor’s assistance in areas such as scheduling and registration procedures, coping with academic difficulties, and meeting graduation requirements. Students were also asked to rate their impressions of their current academic advisor in areas such as helpfulness, listening skills, effectiveness, and knowledge of academic discipline. DSU’s ratings are compared to other students from four-year public universities around the country.

Dakota State University officials released record enrollment numbers for Fall 2009 today (Thursday.) The student head count at DSU rose from 2,780 students in 2008 to 2861, an increase of 2.91%. In addition to this increase in headcount numbers the Full Time Equivalent (FTE) enrollment increased from 2371 to 2598 an increase of 9.57 % and the undergraduate headcount grew from 1,556.6 to 1,631.5 for an increase of 4.81%.

Representatives of South Dakota's public universities and the Board of Regents joined Gov. Mike Rounds March 17 to commemorate the signing of House Bill 1085. House Bill 1085 authorizes a $74.5 million state bond issue to finance construction, renovation, and modernization of 11 higher education science facility and laboratory projects. The bill contained $6 million in bonding authority to renovate the Habeger Science Center at Dakota State University.

The Karl E. Mundt Library and the DSU Student Senate have joined with the program EcoPhones for a green fundraiser. EcoPhones accepts and pays for small electronic items for recycling. Money raised through the recycling project will be used by the library for the purchase of recreational materials such as DVDs for the library collection. Dakota State University student Ashley Podhradsky has been named a recipient of the 2008 Google Anita Borg Scholarship. This $1000 scholarship was awarded to 50 women across the nation. Podhradsky is the only woman from South Dakota who is receiving the scholarship. Others schools represented include Berkley, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT.

Dakota State University officials released record enrollment numbers for fall 2008 today (Wednesday.) The student head count at DSU rose from 2,570 students in 2007 to 2,780, an increase of slightly over 8%.
