Dakota State Holds Annual Scholarship Banquet

Dakota State University will hold their annual scholarship banquet Monday, November 16 in the Dakota Prairie Playhouse. The banquet brings together students who have received scholarships and the donors who funded the scholarships. Guest speakers at the banquet will include Mike Begeman, Vice President of Public Service at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, Chris Olson, DSU instructor in the College of Business and Information Systems, and DSU scholarship student recipients Kari Michel and Tyler Van Peursem.

DSU's Advising Program Exceeds Students' Needs

DSU’s academic advising program exceeds students’ needs, according to the 2009 Survey of Academic Advising. During the spring 2009 semester, students were offered the opportunity to complete a comprehensive online survey evaluating their advising experiences at DSU. Students were asked to rate their satisfaction with their advisor’s assistance in areas such as scheduling and registration procedures, coping with academic difficulties, and meeting graduation requirements. Students were also asked to rate their impressions of their current academic advisor in areas such as helpfulness, listening skills, effectiveness, and knowledge of academic discipline. DSU’s ratings are compared to other students from four-year public universities around the country.

Dakota State will host Native American artist Roger Broer Wednesday, November 4 in the DSU Art Gallery in the Mundt Library. A reception will begin at 5:00pm, with a gallery talk from Broer at 6:00pm. At 7:00pm Broer will demonstrate his printing process.

Dakota State University will host Nanocon on the DSU campus November 6-8. Events will take place at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse. This the 7th year the gaming tournament convention has been held at Dakota State. Entrance to the event is free and open to the public. A few of the actual gaming tournaments have small participation fees to cover equipment and prizes.

Dakota State University officials released record enrollment numbers for Fall 2009 today (Thursday.) The student head count at DSU rose from 2,780 students in 2008 to 2861, an increase of 2.91%. In addition to this increase in headcount numbers the Full Time Equivalent (FTE) enrollment increased from 2371 to 2598 an increase of 9.57 % and the undergraduate headcount grew from 1,556.6 to 1,631.5 for an increase of 4.81%.

Dakota State University has an annual economic impact of $41.9 million on the community of Madison and Lake County. That is the conclusion reached by a recent economic impact study supported by the Lake Area Improvement Corporation (LAIC) commissioned by the Rural Learning Center, Howard, South Dakota and conducted by researchers from the National Center for Rural Health Works from Oklahoma State University.

Jessica Parsley has been award a $1,000 scholarship from the National Delta Mu Delta organization. Delta Mu Delta is a national honor society in the field of business administration. The President currently lives in the Girton House, which is located directly across from campus. The house was built in 1896 and with the exception of a few short interruptions, has been the home of the serving Dakota State President since 1931.

House Bill 1085 authorizes a $74.5 million state bond issue to finance construction, renovation, and modernization of 11 higher education science facility and laboratory projects. Dakota State University student Ashley Podhradsky has been named a recipient of the 2008 Google Anita Borg Scholarship. This $1000 scholarship was awarded to 50 women across the nation. Podhradsky is the only woman from South Dakota who is receiving the scholarship. Others schools represented include Berkley, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT.

The Karl E. Mundt Library and the DSU Student Senate have joined with the program EcoPhones for a green fundraiser. EcoPhones accepts and pays for small electronic items for recycling. Money raised through the recycling project will be used by the library for the purchase of recreational materials such as DVDs for the library collection. Boxes to collect recycled items will be placed at the library and at the Trojan Center on campus as well as at the Madison Public Library.
