Exemption Types

Physical Health Exemption

Applicants requesting a release from the housing requirement based on this criterion must provide information from the attending physician stating the specific verifiable condition for which it is medically necessary for the student to be released and why specific off-campus housing would provide better living conditions in regard to this medical condition.

Applicants must obtain a medical exemption request form from the residence life office or the DSU residence life webpage. The form must be completed in detail and signed by the attending physician by deadlines established annually by the residence life office.

Additionally, the applicant must submit a written statement that details their specific reason(s) for seeking a medical exemption to the residence life office by deadlines established annually by the residence life office. The exemption committee may base their decision solely on the content of the applicant's statement and the medical exemption request form so it is important that these documents provide enough detail to give the committee a full understanding of the situation.

Mental Health Exemption

Applicants requesting a release from the housing requirement based on mental health or emotional needs must provide a specific psychological recommendation from a licensed mental health care provider. The recommendation note must be presented on official office letterhead (no hand written prescription note pad statements will be accepted) and be signed and dated by the provider authoring the document. Additionally, the applicant must submit a written statement that details their specific reason(s) for seeking a mental health exemption to the residence life office by deadlines established annually by the residence life office. The exemption committee may base their decision solely on the content of the applicant's statement and the provider's recommendation summary so it is important that these documents provide enough detail to give the committee a full understanding of the situation.

Applicants may seek a recommendation from the DSU counseling center instead of an off-campus mental health care provider if they are seeing University staff counselors on a regular basis.

Financial Hardship Exemption

Applicants requesting release from the housing requirement based on verifiable extenuating circumstances must obtain a supplemental financial need verification form from the residence life office or the residence life webpage. Releases are not based upon the assertion that living off campus may be cheaper. A release will be considered when the applicant has a significant verified need for financial aid as defined by the personnel of the DSU financial aid office and that need is not fully funded by university financial aid. OR when financial circumstances are created by situations over which you have no control (such as a loss of parental support due to death, divorce, loss of employment, catastrophic health issues, bankruptcy) which create a financial hardship.
