Dakota State University students walking around campus

Preparation + opportunity = success

That's the DSU equation. We're a four-year university with nationally recognized programs, cutting-edge facilities, and the brightest thinkers. But we're also a tight-knit, inclusive community. Small class sizes mean hands-on training and individualized attention. All this with an affordable, public school price that's among the best values in the region.

Trail Goods Drive for 38+2 Memorial Ride

December 10, 2019

The annual 38+2 Memorial Ride is coming through Madison on Saturday, December 14.

This year, members of the organizational committees, DSU’s Committee for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the Native American Student Association, are encouraging the community to contribute to a trail goods drive. This drive would provide riders with warm winter clothing items, non-perishable food items such as beef jerky and trail mix, or lip balms. Items may be dropped off at DSU’s Karl Mundt Library, the Madison Public Library and DSU’s Trojan Center,  prior to the ride.

The riders will come through Madison sometime between 12:30 and 2 p.m. Saturday, depending on the weather conditions. The community is encouraged to greet and support the riders on their procession through town. The proposed route (subject to approval) is 2nd Street NW, north on Egan Avenue, east on 8th Street NE, south on Washington Avenue. Updates will be available on the Mundt Library social media accounts.

There will also be evening activities at the Trojan Center, beginning with a program at about 7 p.m. Elders on the ride offer comments, and this year a Dakota State representative will make a land acknowledgement statement, an indigenous protocol that expresses gratitude and appreciation to the indigenous people who have lived and worked on the land.

For the third year in a row, a team from the Sioux Chef is preparing an evening meal, made from indigenous ingredients.  The Sioux Chef team are committed to revitalizing Native American cuisine and reclaiming an important culinary culture. The meal will be served to riders first, then to others attending the event, until the food is gone.
