DSU to Offer Special ‘Children of Alumni’ Tuition Rate

April 1, 2015

Children of alumni from Dakota State University may have a new financial incentive to attend their parent’s alma mater. The South Dakota Board of Regents agreed to set a special “children of alumni” tuition rate for students who reside outside of South Dakota. The program is available exclusively to incoming DSU freshmen or transfer students whose parent or legal guardian earned a degree from Dakota State.

With over 40% of DSU alumni living out-of-state, this program will give approximately 4,700 alumni an additional incentive to continue a Dakota State legacy within their family.

“We often hear from alumni asking about ‘child of alumni’ programs. We do all we can to encourage legacy students – children of alumni – to come to DSU, because we know campus loyalty runs deep in families. But, often that legacy student’s college decision comes down to financial factors,” said DSU’s Alumni Director, Jona Schmidt.

The program, which begins this fall semester, applies to those who live out-of-state and will allow those students to receive in-state tuition and fees, if they meet eligibility requirements.

DSU’s requirements include:

  • ACT composite score of at least a 20
  • To retain the award, the student must complete no less than 30 semester credit hours within an academic year and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

“This new program, offering in-state tuition rates to out-of-state children of alumni, shows me that we are doing what we can to give children of our graduates the same opportunity they had to receive an education at Dakota State,” said Schmidt.  “No one can tell the story of DSU like our alumni can. They are our best and most loyal recruiters. This gives them an additional incentive to tell that story, and to encourage their children to attend DSU.”
