August 1, 2017

Dakota State University President José-Marie Griffiths today announced the schedule of events surrounding the “Welcome to the Future” celebration that will officially open the Beacom Institute of Technology, the first new academic building on campus in 30 years.

The celebration will be held on Sunday, August 20 on the DSU campus, and the schedule of events includes:

  • 3 – 4 p.m. A grand opening ceremony will be held on Washington Avenue in front of the Beacom Institute of Technology. Speakers for the ceremony include: South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard; President Griffiths; Beacom Institute of Technology namesake Miles Beacom, a 1981 Dakota State University alumnus and president and CEO of PREMIER Bankcard; South Dakota Board of Regents President Bob Sutton; and other dignitaries. The keynote speaker for the event is Mark Ryland, director of solutions architecture and chief architect for the World Wide Public Sector Team at Amazon Web Services.
  • 4 – 6 p.m. Guests will be able to take self-guided tours of the new Beacom Institute of Technology, as well as the newly renovated Learning Engagement Center and Courtyard Hall, both located in the former Madison Regional Hospital, and the remodeled Trojan Center and Trojan Center Bookstore.
  • 4 – 6 p.m. A free backyard BBQ will be held for all guests (while supplies last). Inflatables and games for all ages will also be available.
  • 5 – 7:30 p.m. Country music star Jake Owen and special guest Hunter Phelps will celebrate with a free outdoor concert on the south lawn.

Seating is limited and visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the celebration. First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard are the official celebration sponsors.

“We are delighted to launch this school year with a celebration of this magnitude, and are happy to welcome all students, faculty, friends and the community to celebrate with us as we officially open the Beacom Institute of Technology,” said Griffiths.

The $11.4 million structure was designed to advance innovative approaches in education with state-of-the-art classrooms, teaching laboratories and collaborative spaces, where faculty in all disciplines may develop and refine new teaching methods.

“The Beacom Institute of Technology was deliberately planned for the use and benefit of all students, regardless of their major,” said Griffiths. In addition, the building does have several state-of-the-art specialized facilities for computer game design, animation, and network security administration.

All Dakota State graduates, in turn, create an impact in their career fields. “Dakota State students and alumni are reaching prestigious milestones and accomplishing impressive successes locally and nationally,” Griffiths said.

Dakota State’s high-caliber faculty and degree programs are attracting an increasing number of students. “Dakota State’s enrollment has been steadily growing since the 1984 mission change, which added a technology focus to the institution’s heritage mission of education,” she said.
