New DSU bike fleet will give students accessibility

Dakota State University’s Trojan Transit program is expanding to include bicycles.

Nicole Claussen, director of international programs at DSU, worked with the DSU Student Senate and East Dakota Transit last spring to provide free bus rides for students. This fall she hopes to add a bicycle fleet to the program.

To supply the fleet, she is asking the on-campus and greater Madison community for donations of bicycles in useable condition. Tax receipts for the donated bikes will be provided by the DSU Foundation.

While the International Programs office will manage the bike fleet program, it is intended for all students, Claussen emphasized. “Making campus and the city of Madison accessible to all Dakota State University students will help make their experience here a good one,” she said.

Students will be able to check out bikes for the school year so they can more easily get to and from class, or around the city of Madison. “Depending on the weather, they could use it all year,” she said. Students will be responsible for the bicycle, and will be assessed a fee if it is lost. There is the potential for winter storage on campus, she added.
