Athletic Committee Charter

I. COMMITTEE MISSION

Institutional control of intercollegiate athletics rests with and is exercised by the President of the University. In this capacity the President is ultimately responsible for ensuring that Dakota State University's athletic policies and programs are in compliance with the rules and regulations of the institution's National and Conference affiliations. The Athletic Director, who is accountable to the President, exercises authority for the administration and management of intercollegiate athletic programs. The Athletic Committee shall support the Athletic Director by identifying opportunities to improve student athletes’ academic success, increase enrollment of student athletes, increase support for and engagement in DSU Athletics, and improve communication between Athletics, faculty, and other staff.

II. COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP AND APPOINTMENTS

  • The Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) will chair the Athletic Committee as part of his or her FAR duties.
  • All voting members of the Athletic Committee are eligible for election to the position of vice chair. The vice chair will serve a one-year term starting at the first Athletic Committee meeting in the fall (approx. September 15th).

Members include:

  • Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) appointed by the President (Chair)
  • Athletic Director (Nature of Office)
  • Three (3) faculty representatives elected by General Faculty
  • One (1) student selected by the President of the University from a list of three students nominated by the Student Senate
  • Head coach of a Women's team at DSU appointed by the President
  • Head coach of a Men's team at DSU appointed by the President
  • One male student-athlete selected by the Athletic Director from the Captains' Council from the teams that are not represented by the head coaches on the committee
  • One female student-athlete selected by the Athletic Director from the Captains' Council from the teams that are not represented by the head coaches on the committee
